Celebrate and Be Inspired! - Annually on 8 March, International Women's Day (IWD) seeks to inspire and connect women throughout the world via a global web of rich and diverse local activities. Activities range from political rallies, business conferences, and government and networking events, through to local women's craft markets, theatre performances, fashion parades and much more!
Originally celebrated as a Socialist political event, IWD has been observed since in the early 1900's. While the struggles for equality for women from across all walks of life and in all countries still exist, the focus of IWD in recent times has, moved from being a reminder about the negatives to a celebration of the positives. IWD is now strongly recognised and supported by men as well as women, and in addition focuses on inspiring young girls to dream and achieve.
Gunnedah Shire Council and the community work together to organise its own celebrations in order to recognise the strong and vibrant women who contribute to the rich and dynamic economic, political and social fabric of its community.
